The Claddagh ring design dates all the way back to the 16th century, originating in the village known as Claddagh in County Galway. According to legend, a fishing boat from that village was captured by pirates and the crew taken as slaves. One of the crew, Richard Joyce, was actually taught goldsmithing by his master in the many years he served as a slave.

Eventually, Joyce was released and able to return home to the village to find his hearts love still waiting for him. To celebrate he created a special ring for her, with hands representing love, two hands for friendship and a crown for loyalty.

The Claddagh ring today is popular worldwide because of what it still symbolizes: love, friendship and loyalty. A good tip: You should wear the heart pointing away from your own heart if you are “available,” but wear it pointing toward your heart if your heart is promised to someone.

The Celtic knot on this ring symbolized eternity.

In the old Gaelic language, fadó means “long ago.” In Ireland many favorite children’s stories will start out with “fadó fadó,” or “a long, long time ago.” Today Fadó creates a variety of Celtic jewelry, using the inspiration of our Celtic heritage but also creating very contemporary pieces using knots, Claddagh and other classic symbols.

We like to think that our Fadó jewelry captures the essence of Irish style and history, connecting our long past with the modern Irish world.
